Disappointed that IT doesn't live up to expectations?

Technology is falling in price. Just take the cost of disk storage. In the 1970s, 500MB of disk would have cost you about £5M. Nowadays you can buy 500GB (that’s 1,000 times as much) for £56. That makes the price of 500MB less than 1P! Nowhere else have we seen such incredible price deflation. It’s a similar, though less dramatic, story with servers and PCs. Yet, curiously, the cost of IT continues to rise. We just seem to need more and more resources to run our increasingly complex systems and as the critical nature of IT increases, so too does the cost of managing all of those resources.

The reduced cost of storage has led to a massive increase in data; all of which must be managed in accordance with good governance, regulation and legislation using expensive software and manpower. The price of technology has become an irrelevance when compared with the cost of staff, premises and electricity. What appears to be a significant IT budget can all too easily disappear on maintaining the status quo; just keeping the lights on. Where is the value? Where is the business contribution? Where is the competitive edge?

IT has developed a life of its own and it’s time to put it back in its place. Getting control over IT infrastructure means less waste and more business contribution.
